The Need
Uganda is a country where health needs are considerable and urgent >for example – the maternal mortality rate is 550 deaths/100,000 live births compared with 6 deaths/100,000 for the UK . There are also very high rates of infant and perinatal mortality. Life expectancy is age 52 compared with a world average of 66. The country suffers in particular from high rates of HIV /Aids, Malaria, TB, Diarrhoea and other water borne diseases.
The northern parts of Uganda have these very high rates because of the poor economy and a history of insurgency and natural disasters such as recent flooding and drought.
The provision
The area of Teso in the North East has a population of 1.26 million and is served by a network of hospitals, two of which were established by UK Church missions at Kumi and Ngora. They have worked for many years to meet the health needs of the Teso people. Since independence they have been run by the Church of Uganda mainly with Uganda staff.
Ngora Hospital
Ngora hospital was founded by the Church Missionary Society in 1922. It is located in a large rural community providing: Accident and Emergency services, HIV /Aids treatment, Paediatrics, Immunisation, Malaria control, Gynaecology, Dental care and Ultra sound services. The hospital is a key centre for training nurses. The Hospital catchment has a population of around 140,000 and has 180 beds. It treats 35000 patients/year as in and out patients. The staffing norm should be 90, 4 of whom are doctors and 23 registered nurses.
The Needs
The hospital runs on income provided by government grant and fees from patients. This is generally inadequate and means that the hospital suffers especially from a shortage of qualified staff, accommodation and equipment. In recent years, the hospital has been helped by UK charities to install a generator, and upgrade its water supply. Teso Development Trust has provided a consignment of new equipment e.g beds and bedding, wheelchairs, laboratory equipment and a major sterilising unit. The Trust has a partnership with Queens University Hospital, Nottingham who give us first refusal on second hand quality equipment.
The Future
The trust has organised medical staff from Nottingham Hospitals to visit to assess how help can best be given and provide input through training and advice. A fund has been set up which pays for new equipment and staff training.
